Building a Resume

GETTING STARTED

  • Think about the audience of your resume, and tailor it to reflect the organization's goals and mission when possible.
  • Keep the resume at one page in length.
  • Create a document that is visually appealing so it stands out among the masses.
  • A resume is a marketing tool showcasing applicable skills; not a comprehensive history.
  • If you utilize a "skills" section, make sure they are each relevant/meaningful and correlate with the experiences you have listed.
  • Avoid using personal pronouns such as "I" and "my".
  • Have your resume proofread! Just as you wouldn't turn in a final paper without proofreading, make sure there are no grammatical errors hindering your application.
  • Remove "duties/responsibilities included" and instead focus in on what accomplishments you have achieved within past roles.
  • Do not include references or the term "references available upon request."
  • Establish your own personal brand - all resumes will and should be individualized while maintaining essential information such as contact, education, and experience.
  • Understand the role you are applying for and incorporate key parts/terms of the position into
  • your resume as you see fit.
Bullet points standard format:

How? How many? For whom? Etc.]

Include:
Why the task was important
Your impact within the organization
How you performed your duties
What skills you used or developed
  • Ungrouped
