A new course number is needed:
1. Anytime the course description changes substantially. Primarily, this is in relation to the course content and will involve associated changes to the Core Learning Outcomes. A good rule is to ask the following: If a student took the course two years ago, would they be taking the same course if they registered for it today? If the answer is "no", a new course number is needed. The University’s “Course Level Distinctions, Course Type Definitions, and Instructional Delivery Definitions” policy located on the University Curriculum Committee and Graduate Council MyPark sites guides the assignment of course levels.
2. A course title only change or credit hour only change would not need a new course number. While this may lead to some confusion, creating a new course number for a title only or credit hour only change causes even more confusion and a great deal of complication.
3. A course that has been removed from a catalog can be reinstated as long as the course description is the same. A new title can be assigned to a reinstated course without changing the course number.
4. A course number that has been deleted from the catalog can be reused (with the exception of the above situation) after a seven year time period if there are no active students whose degree program requires the original course.
When a new course is being created or an existing course revised to a new instructional level, contact the Office of the Registrar for a course number prior to submitting proposals in Curriculog. The “Course Level Distinctions, Course Type Definitions, and Instructional Delivery Definitions” policy guides the assignment of course numbers for new or substantially revised courses.
