LE Subcommittee Charter
Overview:
The Liberal Education Subcommittee is a standing subcommittee of the Undergraduate Curriculum Committee. The subcommittee deliberates all matters related to Liberal Education, especially review and assessment of LE-prefix courses and assists the Director of Liberal Education in administering the LE program in its entirety.
Composition:
1 representative from each undergraduate school (elected)
Director of Liberal Education (ex-officio)
Other ex-officio members as appointed
Chair Responsibilities:
The director of Liberal Education will serve as committee chair. Chair duties are taken directly from the director’s annual contract and currently include:
- Provide students, faculty, departments and colleges with information about the Liberal Education program.
- Act as a resource for colleges, schools, departments, and faculty interested in developing courses for the Liberal Education program.
- Provide support for the articulation of Liberal Education courses with other institutions.
- Work with designated Faculty Senate Committees (Undergraduate Curriculum Committee and Assessment Committee) and leadership of Academic Affairs on continuous improvements of the LE program.
- Facilitate the subcommittee's work on developing and revising policy recommendations to the Undergraduate Curriculum Committee.
- Provide leadership for and carry out assessment of the Liberal Education program, including annual assessment reports and periodic program reviews.
- Prepare appropriate reports related to liberal education in concert with Academic Affairs’ leadership, including reporting for accreditation purposes.
- Collaborate with University offices and programs to ensure that accurate information about the Liberal Education program is communicated to new and continuing students.
- In consultation with Academic Affairs, prepare and update the Liberal Education University publications, including catalog copy and website in accordance with University procedures.
Committee Responsibilities:
- Review and provide recommendations on the Liberal Education curriculum, including review of proposed LE-prefix and LE-designated courses.
- Review and provide recommendations on the Liberal Education assessment plan and annual reports.
- Through the Curriculum Committee, review and recommend revisions to Liberal Education requirements.
Structure, Meeting and Staff Support:
A staff member will be appointed to serve as recording secretary. Meetings will typically occur once per month during the academic year.
Accounting and Reporting:
The Liberal Education subcommittee reports to the Undergraduate Curriculum Committee, the Faculty Senate, and the Provost or Provost’s representative. The minutes of the meetings will be transmitted to the Faculty Senate and posted on the LE Committee MyPark page. The agenda, work activities, accomplishments, and recommendations will be reported annually to the Undergraduate Curriculum Committee and Faculty Senate. A self-evaluation assessment shall be completed by the committee no later than 31 May of each year. This report will submitted with the annual LE program assessment report.
